Today we’re heading down by the riverside to Putney and the newly-opened Coppa Club. This riverside walk became a regular one for me during Lockdowns and I always felt sad walking past the deserted bars and restaurants along the way. One of them, which had clearly been abandoned, was where the Coppa Club Putney is now. Habits die hard and I’m still doing those riverside walks occasionally, much more uplifting now that everything is open again (well so far at least) And imagine my delight when I walked past to see a redesign happening in the abandoned building – Coppa Club was emerging. The company has a raft of other properties, mainly outside London (nine to be precise) as well as the iconic Tower Hill branch. They always look so enticing, so I’m super happy that one has opened easy walking distance from home. And it’s time for us to test it out.
And what a beautiful job they have done. It’s such a stylish space with a lovely terrace (gonna be spending some time on that in the summer for sure!) and three of their iconic igloos all overlooking the Thames. Inside it’s decorated in shades of blue and green (my favourite) with a stylish wood-panelled bar, library snug area and dining area within the conservatory space. It’s truly wow and the sort of place I could spend a lot of time in…
What’s on the menu
The food is described as a modern take on British and Mediterranean classics. There’s a good selection of dishes including salads, pastas, pizzas, fish and steaks.
First up, the prawn starter. Seared king prawns cooked in garlic, lemon, chilli and parsley. It wasn’t clear on the menu that they were going to be served on bread but it was delicious bread and we needed something to mop up all the delicious sauce! A lovely prawn dish.
I tucked into crunchy buttermilk chicken which came with a beautifully spicy chilli mayo and some refreshing crunchy slaw on the side.
It’s Pasta for Mains
Today we were in a pasta state of mind – well it was a cold, miserable evening. This is the Nduja and pork pappardelle – a spicy rag served topped with Parmesan. Nduja is a spicy Italian sausage that is often used to add a chilli bite to dishes which it did perfectly here. Beautiful pasta too.
I went fishy with a bowl of Devon crab linguine (love the bowls). Hand-picked white crab meat with capers, chilli, anchovy, parsley and lemon. Light and delicate and rich and fishy at the same time. Pasta portions can be ordered in small or larger portions which I love – a small (er) plate of pasta can usually do me perfectly.
Today was a pudding night (rare though they are). The warm treacle tart was served with creme fraiche and candied orange on the side. Sweet and satisfying.
I went for Jude’s ice creams and sorbets – for my three scopes I chose honeycomb ice cream (which I adore though I try not to eat it too often), and raspberry and lemon sorbets. A real indulgence.
In Conclusion
The food is well done at Coppa Club – tasty, varied and very well priced. And the actual venue is spectacular. I’ve even included some pictures of it so you can see what I mean. I’m picturing many more riverside soirees… that bar is mega tempting and there’s a fabulous looking cocktail list. Anyone for some exotic drinking down by the river?
Here’s the entrance with one of the igloos beside it.
Love the booths, too…and of course who doesn’t want to hire an igloo. There’s a special exclusive igloo menu that goes with it.
