Today we’re heading to Tooting Market. My first visit which is really quite shocking considering I live literally down the road a short bus ride away. Lunch is at Bayou Bar, a New Orleans-style eatery just inside the entrance. And they’re serving up a delicious festive offering.
Settled into one of the booths and before going full on into Christmas cheer we enjoyed a Hurricane. A classic cocktail from New Orleans it’s made with dark and golden rum, passion fruit, grenadine and lemon. This is a heavenly cocktail – fresh and zesty with deep rum flavours. Good start.

For the Christmas season there’s also a special frozen Daiquiri – with flavours of cherry, cranberry and lemon. Festive flavours in a glass. Love the dried orange decoration too.

And then on to the ultimate Christmas sandwich, the delightful turkey Po Boy. A Po Boy is a traditional sandwich from Louisiana and this one is a giant. The softest of brioche buns filled to bursting with crisp turkey schnitzel with a gingerbread and breadcrumb crust, zesty home made coleslaw, homemade chill jam mixed with their own cranberry sauce and American-style cheese. A great mix of flavours and textures creating an exotic and satisfying Christmas sandwich.

And here are the delights you’ll find inside.

Bayou Bar offers a tasty range of New Orleans-inspired dishes and great cocktails too. Service is welcoming and friendly and there’s live music over weekends. Plenty of reasons to visit then.
And Tooting Market, well, what can I say? Such a joyous place right on my doorstep, more about this marvellous market coming soon – so watch this space. I’ll be getting back on that bus soon.
