Today’s post is dedicated to lovers of the beautiful avocado, like me. Avos are actually a type of berry and they’re super-good for you, being packed in vitamins and minerals and containing high levels of beneficial fats. They’re said to be good for your vision, great for heart health, improve digestion and are a natural detoxifier. They are even thought to prevent bone loss and lower the risk of depression. And if all those magical qualities weren’t enough, they taste delicious, too. You don’t need any more reasons to eat them
I grew up on a farm in Zimbabwe and we had this huge avo tree in our garden that dropped large, delicious avos every year. I grew up eating avocado on toast for breakfast (something I still love doing). Lucky me. Avocados are so versatile. They’re great on toast with or without eggs (and are delicious with crispy bacon). The perfect addition to salads or accompaniment to a range of meat and fish in guacamole or puree. Here’s a link to one of my more creative recipes that pays homage to my Southern African heritage – biltong, goat’s cheese and avo bruschetta.
Make it Easy with Microplane’s Avocado Tool 3 in 1
Avos are notoriously tricky to prepare. There’s a phenomenon called ‘avocado hand’ when the knife slips as you’re prepping, resulting in injury. It’s more common than you think. A&E’s around the country get their fair share of avocado hands coming in for treatment.
The good news is that there’s now a tool to help prevent that. The new, high-quality, stainless steel Microplane 3-in-1 Avocado Tool splits, pits, slices and extracts the flesh safely and effectively.
There’s an easy-to-grip handle and the blade is designed to smoothly cut the avo in half and slice the flesh with ease. The pitter (a hole in the centre of the tool) has small teeth and can easily remove the stone easily with a simple twist. And yes it really does work. Happy avo eating everyone.
And finally. The professional avocado tool 3 in 1 is available from John Lewis for £21.95.
