Tasty lunch and beautiful wine at Bon Courage

So this week we drove from Cape Town to George to spend a few days at the beautiful golf and sports resort at Fancourt (more of that later). It’s a pretty long drive, so we decided to take the scenic route which meanders through the Winelands past Worcester and Robertson, hoping to buy some wine on the way and stop for a bite to eat.

Once you get deeper into the mountains, it’s proper get-away-from-it-all country with vines and farmland and plenty of stunning views. Just heavenly. Soon it was time for lunch. We were being spontaneous (or disorganised) so had absolutely no idea what we would encounter so when we saw the sign for Bon Courage vineyard and restaurant we immediately turned off the road.

Set between the Breede River and Langeberg Mountains near Robertson, Bon Courage is run by Andre Bruwer and his son Jacques who produce some amazing wines.

A beautiful little restaurant with outside tables under a huge old African pepper tree beckoned. Cafe Maude is run by Maude Bruwer who is Jacques’ sister. And it’s fabulous. You’ll find a selection of creative sandwiches, burgers and salads as well as a kid’s menu. The breakfast selection looked delicious too.

Today was one of the easiest menu decision-making days I’ve ever had as I immediately spotted the biltong salad on the menu. The combination of biltong, avo and blue cheese with the crispiness of the amazingly fresh salad was just perfection. I’m dying to know what the biltong was marinated in…

The burger came on the lightest, tastiest bun – they make their own bread here, too, and it’s fab. A great patty with a lovely tomato and onion relish and simply the best chips.

After lunch it was time for a quick wine tasting so we could stock up with some gems for our holiday. We walked away with a great mixed case including Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Pinotage. We savoured every sip! Great wine.

What a satisfying lunch – fresh ingredients that were perfectly cooked and served with a smile. Spontaneity in the Winelands clearly works. Now what’s the chance of me finding out what that biltong was marinated in?
