Today we’re heading into another Cape Town neighbourhood. Observatory (affectionately known as Obz by its residents) is famed for its bohemian vibe and large student population. It’s teeming with cool cafes and bars, quirky shops and diverse eateries. And, as we were soon to discover, a warm and friendly welcome.
Our destination for lunch is called Hundred Percent Cafe (100%). It’s a stylish, artistically decorated cafe serving up the. home-cooked food of its owner’s childhood – family recipes passed down through the generations and prepared and cooked from the heart.
Nokuthula Thuly Mati (who is originally from the Eastern Cape), admits to loving cooking (like me). 100% started out as a shop mainly for her tailor husband to sell his garments it has now evolved into a friendly neighbourhood cafe with tasty food, excellent coffee and regular events for locals to attend. Her idea is to create a home-from-home for the people of Obz to enjoy their social gatherings in a relaxed environment. the concept started one Sunday when she decided to cook Sunday lunch (who doesn’t love a Sunday lunch cooked for them) and was amazed by the response. And the Hundred Percent Cafe was born.
What’s on the Menu
The blackboard menu includes her favourite dishes, freshly cooked by her every morning as well as a selection of sandwiches. It’s a work in progress with more dishes being added over time as the inspiration takes her. Today we enjoyed a selection of fish, chicken and beef stew served with perfectly cooked rice and the tastiest of vegetables.
The walls are adorned with colourful artwork and visitors are encouraged to settle down with a book or play a game of chess. Or of course, spend some time getting to know their neighbours.
I particularly loved this beautiful hibiscus.
Thuly has undoubtedly fulfilled her dream of creating a space where everyone feels happy and at home. As demonstrated by the smiling faces. Her passion for cooking from the heart shines through and her pride in the space she is creating is tangible.
Hundred Percent Cafe is at 287 Lower Main Road, Observatory, Cape Town. There’s coffee, soul food, tees and sweaters and live music events. And the cafe now has a liquor licence so you can even pop in for a glass of wine or a beer. Even better!
