It’s competition time again. And today you have the chance to win an amazing gourmet salt and pepper gift set from Steenbergs. The Para’s Special Wynad Pepper is grown on the small family-owned estate of Parameswaran in Wayanad in Southern India. Coincidentally I was there recently and did see a lot of pepper creepers growing everywhere, it’s real pepper country. This particular pepper is slightly red in colour and has a fruitier, more complex flavour than standard pepper. 

The Siratany Madagascan Bourbon Salt is prepared by women in the Ankazombalala region of South West Madagascar where it’s found in the soil. Both the salt and the pepper are shipped to the UK where they are packed into stylish calico bags with tags attached telling their amazing stories.

The Steenbergs Story


Based in rural North Yorkshire, Steenbergs Organic was established in 2003 by Axel and Sophie Steenberg. They are centred on sourcing and packing the best organic spices, herbs and teas and one of the leaders in Fairtrade spices.  “At Steenbergs, we are passionate about provenance and want to celebrate the spices and seasonings of small independent producers and growers,” says Axel. “Our single estate Para’s pepper and newly launched hand-harvested Madagascan salt are fabulous examples of how traditional “slow” methods can create great tasting products, and how through direct trade small scale producers can get access to the benefits of global trade – as income, and support for community-based conservation. This is the heartbeat of what Steenbergs is about.”
