Best Restaurants in London’s Chinatown: New Loon Fung

Every day I am thankful that I live in such a fabulous city. There’s so much to see and do around London Town and more food to try than even I can manage. So whatever craving hits, there’s a way to satisfy it. And when it comes to a craving for Chinese food where better to head for than London’s bustling Chinatown. So that’s what we did today.

I love meandering around this vibrant area between Leicester Square and Soho, it’s almost like being transported to somewhere else in the world. There’s so much activity, fabulous Chinese supermarkets overflowing with exotic goodies and the delightful aroma of all those delicious dishes being prepared fills the air. This is when your mouth starts watering in anticipation!  After perusing several menus, today we chose New Loon Fung for our Chinese lunch fix. It’s next door to the famous Loon Fung Supermarket and its name means New Dragon Phoenix. Sounds somewhat magical to me! And as you ascend the purple-dragon carpeted staircase more magical food smells beckon.

What’s on the menu

New Loon Fung is known particularly for its Cantonese food and seafood selection – and it’s a vast one, with over 100 dishes on the menu. Luckily our cravings were quite specific so we knew to look for our favourite prawn and beef dishes to share with a large bowl of special fried rice.

First up, Kung Po prawns. Juicily delicious plump prawns in a savoury, spicy sauce with vegetables and peanuts and a real kick of fresh chilli.

I love a special fried rice and this is a great one, packed full of all those little extras that make it so special.

And then it was time for a skillet of sizzling Mandarin fillet. Beautifully sweet and tender fillet steak in a sticky sauce with delightfully crunchy onions. Heavenly.

Chinese cravings totally satisfied, we left with the vow that we really should visit Chinatown more often. And we will. Love the red lanterns which make it so easy to find. You can’t miss it.

Today’s price point

Lunch for two with a nice bottle of red wine came to £66.

New Loon Fung Restaurant is at 42-43 Gerrard Street, London W1 in the heart of Chinatown.
