Recipe book: Rick Stein’s Far Eastern Odyssey

Published in 2009 (so it’s been around for a while), this is one of my a regular go-to recipe books when I’m looking for inspiration. It accompanied the TV programme where Rick visited restaurants, markets and farms in Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Bali, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. I love Asian food, though I have only visited Thailand from the list above. No reason why I can’t bring the different flavours into my kitchen, though.

Last night I wanted to cook something light, flavoursome and quick and easy to make. When I started to look, the book actually fell open on this recipe. So I took it as a sign and dinner was Cambodian marinated beef with a lime and black pepper dipping sauce.

The marinade takes five minutes to assemble and  you leave the beef in it for about half an hour. Then it’s a matter of a bit of chopping, roasting some peanuts and  frying the beef and voila you have a beautiful, tasty and colourful meal.

Wrap all the bits in a lettuce leaf and eat it with your hands. Gotta love eating with your hands  it’s a bit messy, but in a good way. The flavours go wonderfully together and the peanuts add that lovely crunch. I fry them for about 5 mins until they go slightly brown, it seems to add a little bit of extra flavour.

We discovered that our lettuce leaves were a bit on the small side, so we ended up putting the meat in one leaf, the rest in another and wrapping them together! Very successful.

I can’t give you the full recipe – it is Rick’s after all – but if you love Asian food, I’d seriously recommend you buy the book. I’m still using it to work my way around Asia.
