Myoga: Contemporary fusion at the foot of Table Mountain

My goodness, what a great Christmas and new year we’ve had. Hence the total silence on the blogging front for quite some time.

I’m back and ready to go – full of ideas and plans for 2013, so keep reading.

So I have two brothers and two sisters and we’re all very close together in age…I’m the oldest and am just over six years older than my youngest brother. We live on three different continents (Europe, Africa and Australia) so it’s rare that we’re all in the same place at the same time. This Christmas was one of those times as we all converged on Cape Town for a family wedding (my Aunt’s – she’s 80 and it was her first wedding), Christmas, new year and general catch-up time. So It was a spectacular festive season for all of us.

All good things must come to an end, so I got to thinking of somewhere for “the adults” to go for dinner before my sister and brother-in-law Debbie and Steve flew back to Aus.Which is how we chose Myoga. It’s in the beautiful Vineyard Hotel and Spa in Newlands in Cape Town, nestling at the foot of Table Mountain.

Their award-winning chef Mike Bassett, produces dishes best described as contemporary fusion and they do an amazing seven-course tasting menu for R265 (about £20). Here are some of the fabulous dishes we sampled.

The best vol au vent

Mushroom vol auvent with mustard and mushroom soy

ceviche

Smoked trout ceviche with wasabi spuma

prawns

Pan fried prawns, sweet chilli and coriander spuma

bresaola

Seven-spice springbok bresaola, baby beets, baby leaves and honey mustard

broth

Thai-inspired green curry chowder, whitefish, mussels, truffle roasted sweetcorn and charred red pepper salsa

asparagus salad

Holumi salad, asparagus, roast red peppers, soft boiled egg and balsamic reduction

steak

Truffle teriyaki beef, sous vide fillet, tempura vegetable, nam jim and spiced cilantro pachadi

Duo of lamb, lamb rogan josh with potato, lavender honey crusted lamb cutlet, cucumber raita foam and preserved lemon

Berry bomb, white chocolate, strawberry parfait, black cherry coulis

Fudge cheesecake, coffee ice cream and cocoa macaroons

All fabulous, and with something for everyone. The three dishes that really stood out for me were the springbok bresaola (I need to eat a big plate of that all to myself), the holumi salad and the Thai-inspired green curry chowder. In fact I’ll be begging the restaurant for the chowder recipe shortly to see if I can even attempt to recreate it at home.
