One of the many great things about CapeTown is its proximity to the beautiful Winelands around Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl. Only a short and incredibly scenic drive away you’ll find a fantastic selection of wineries and restaurants to visit. Fairview is one of these, famous for its wines and cheeses which are made on the estate…oh and for their goats.
The restaurant is called the Goatshed and is housed in what was originally one of the old wine cellars. It’s informal with a lovely menu which includes sharing options as well as salads, pastas and meat dishes. It was a hot, blue-sky day (the Winelands are often very hot) so we decided to share a selection of cheese, cured meats and smoked fish.
We ordered the cheese platter for two which offered 10 different cheeses, served with preserve and fresh ciabatta. All the bread is freshly made on-site. I love cheese, so a board of different ones with little flags in them got me very excited! We also tucked into a selection of cured meats and some delicious smoked trout. A yummy, sociable way to eat.
And then there’s the goats. Fairview have a herd of more than 1000 female goats and a couple of show-stopping ones to welcome you as you arrive, they are beautiful and very friendly. Here’s the daddy.
As well as the delicious food and wine, Fairview is a great place for all the family. There’s a large area to keep kids entertained – you can make your own cheese and bread, there’s arts and crafts or you can feed and/or milk the goats.
Fairview also offers wine and cheese tastings and pairings in their beautiful tasting rooms. And if that’s not enough, there’s also the deli to visit so you can take home some of their tasty cheeses…and they also make great olive oil. A great day out for all the family…we will be back.
Fairview is at Suid-Agter Paarl Road, near Paarl.
